The European Union has commenced a written procedure to extend sanctions against Russia for an additional six months due to violations of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. An EU official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed this development.
This process allows each member state to sign off on the extension without the need for a meeting of ambassadors. The procedure is set to conclude this evening.
The sanctions in question are individual measures imposed by the EU, which are currently scheduled to expire on March 15, 2026.
Previously, Rikard Jozwiak, an editor for Radio Free Europe focusing on European affairs, reported that Hungary and Slovakia are seeking the removal of seven Russians from the EU sanctions list as a condition for agreeing to the extension.
On September 12, EU ambassadors reached a consensus to prolong personal sanctions for another six months due to the ongoing violations of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. At that time, Slovakia and Hungary had requested the removal of six individuals, but those individuals remain on the sanctions list.
