Escalating Violence in Zaporizhzhia: Russian Strikes Leave Casualties

On March 29, Russian military forces launched a significant offensive in the Zaporizhzhia region, executing 823 strikes across 38 populated areas. This surge in violence resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to four others, as reported by Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration.

Among the most severe incidents was an airstrike on the village of Zarichne, which claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman and left a 72-year-old man injured. Additionally, drone attacks targeted the village of Bilenke, where a 77-year-old man sustained injuries.

The extensive bombardment underscores the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, particularly in areas like Zaporizhzhia, which have been heavily impacted by military actions. The region has witnessed a series of attacks since the escalation of hostilities, contributing to the humanitarian crisis affecting local residents.

In a separate development, authorities have initiated legal proceedings against Galina Z., the former head of the Pension Fund in Izium, for treason. Allegations state that she willingly accepted a position within a makeshift pension fund established during the Russian occupation of Izium in 2022. Following the city’s liberation in September of the same year, she reportedly fled to Russia, where she defended the Russian invasion and appeared in propaganda materials.

Investigations revealed that in July 2022, Galina Z. assumed the role of acting head of the Izium district pension fund, facilitating the operations of this unauthorized entity and executing directives from Russian officials. The charges against her include promoting a false narrative of care and concern for the residents of the occupied territory, portraying the aggressor state in a positive light.

Galina Z. has been charged in absentia with treason and justifying the actions of Russia. If convicted, she faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment along with asset confiscation.

The recent escalation of Russian military strikes in Zaporizhzhia has resulted in casualties and heightened tensions in the region. Concurrently, legal actions are being taken against a former official for alleged collaboration during the occupation.
