A military base in Kuwait housing American and Italian forces was attacked by drones on March 15, resulting in the destruction of Italian drones stationed there. The Italian Ministry of Defense confirmed that no personnel were injured during the incident.
According to a statement from the ministry shared on social media platform X, the Ali Al-Salem base was struck by a drone that targeted a shelter housing remotely piloted Italian Air Force drones. Fortunately, the personnel on site were reported to be safe and unharmed.
“This morning, the Ali Al-Salem base in Kuwait became the target of a drone attack, which hit a shelter containing Italian Air Force drones. At the time of the attack, all personnel were safe and unharmed,” the statement read.
The Italian Ministry of Defense also indicated a reduction in military presence in the Middle East due to ongoing security concerns. On February 28, Israel and the United States initiated military operations against Iran.
Remaining personnel at the base are being deployed for critical mission tasks. The ministry noted that drones are utilized for operational activities.
Military Operations Against Iran
On February 28, Israel conducted airstrikes in Tehran, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to announce the commencement of a “large-scale military operation” against Iran, aimed at mitigating perceived threats from the Iranian regime. Trump accused Iranian authorities of funding and training militants in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.
The stated objectives of the military operation include dismantling Iran’s missile industry and naval capabilities, as well as preventing destabilization in the region.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched missiles and drones towards Israel and attacked American military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
In response to the military actions, French President Emmanuel Macron called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for providing Iranians with an opportunity to rid themselves of what he termed a “terrorist regime,” emphasizing the need for security for all nations affected by Iranian attacks.
On February 28, Trump claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was deceased, a statement later confirmed by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
On March 1, the IRGC announced the launch of what it described as the “most destructive offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic” against Israel and American military bases. Trump warned the Iranian regime to abandon these plans, threatening a “severe response” if they did not.
On March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the next phase of military operations against Iran would be even more devastating.
On March 6, Trump called for a complete change in Iran’s leadership, mentioning he had candidates in mind for a “good leader.” On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
Trump declined to comment on Mojtaba Khamenei’s election, stating only, “We will see what happens.” Previously, he had suggested that the new Iranian leader would not last long without the approval of the White House.
A drone attack on a military base in Kuwait, housing American and Italian forces, resulted in the destruction of Italian drones but no injuries among personnel. This incident occurs amid heightened military operations by Israel and the U.S. against Iran, raising concerns about regional stability.
