Denmark Prepares for Potential U.S. Military Action in Greenland Amid Tensions

In light of former President Donald Trump’s controversial interest in acquiring Greenland, Danish military officials reportedly prepared for possible resistance against U.S. forces. Sources indicate that discussions surrounding the so-called “Greenland crisis” prompted Denmark to bolster its military presence on the island, anticipating a scenario where Trump might attempt to assert control over the territory.

In January, Danish troops were dispatched to Greenland equipped with explosives intended to disable runways in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, effectively thwarting any rapid U.S. air deployment. Additionally, they brought supplies of blood components, anticipating potential casualties in the event of armed conflict.

Concerns escalated following Trump’s persistent remarks about wanting Greenland, especially after the U.S. conducted a swift operation in Venezuela that led to the ousting of President Nicolás Maduro. A source involved in the discussions noted, “When Trump keeps saying he wants Greenland, and then we see what happened in Venezuela, we had to take all scenarios seriously.”

Officials also expressed unease regarding the unpredictability of the Trump administration, suggesting a lack of advisors capable of dissuading him from risky ventures. A French official commented, “With the Greenland crisis, Europe realized we must be capable of ensuring our own security.”

In confidential talks with France and Germany, Danish officials voiced worries that Trump might revive his ambitions for Greenland if re-elected in 2024. They sought political backing to navigate a delicate balance between confronting the U.S. and avoiding outright submission should Trump attempt to act on his desires.

During these discussions, Denmark and its allies agreed to publicly demonstrate solidarity and enhance joint military operations in Greenland. Allies signaled their readiness to send troops to the island if necessary.

Recently, Trump has shifted his focus away from Greenland, with his last mention of the territory occurring in February when he suggested sending a hospital ship to address perceived medical needs. Greenland’s Premier responded by asserting that the island has all the necessary resources and does not require such assistance.

Danish Defense Minister confirmed that the government has no information regarding any plans for an American medical vessel to be sent to Greenland, while the Danish Prime Minister took the opportunity to mock Trump’s comments.

Danish military forces have been preparing for potential U.S. military action in Greenland, prompted by former President Trump's previous claims of interest in the territory. As concerns mount over U.S. intentions, Denmark and its allies are enhancing military readiness and solidarity in the region.
