Cuba Faces Nationwide Blackout Amid U.S. Tensions; Global Developments in Iran and Ukraine

Cuba has experienced a nationwide blackout following a cessation of oil supplies from the United States, plunging the nation into a deeper energy and humanitarian crisis. Concurrently, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated on March 16 that he would consider military action against Cuba, describing it as a weak state and expressing intentions to either liberate or seize control of the island.

The recent blackout marks a significant escalation from an earlier partial outage earlier in March. The Cuban government has attributed the ongoing energy crisis to decades of U.S. economic sanctions, which have hindered investment in the country’s electricity production and infrastructure. In January, Trump declared a national emergency concerning Cuba, citing the Cuban government’s actions as a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy, alleging that Havana supports hostile nations and terrorist organizations.

Trump Delays Visit to China Amid Iran Conflict President Trump announced a postponement of his planned visit to China, originally scheduled for late March, due to military operations against Iran. He stated, “I would very much like to go, but due to the war, I want to be here. I have to be here.” The trip was intended to address trade discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Contextually, this delay follows a statement from Iran’s Foreign Minister, who noted military cooperation with Russia and China, emphasizing their roles as strategic partners. The discussions were anticipated to include a trade truce between the U.S. and China.

Hungary Seeks EU Suspension of Tariffs on Fertilizers from Russia and Belarus Hungary’s Minister of Agriculture, István Nagy, has requested the European Commission to temporarily lift tariffs on fertilizers imported from Russia and Belarus. This request is driven by rising global fertilizer prices and supply uncertainties linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Nagy warned that Hungary could face crop losses without access to affordable fertilizer imports.

The European Council has previously established new tariffs on agricultural products and fertilizers from Russia and Belarus, set to take effect in July 2025, as part of measures aimed at weakening the economic capabilities of Russia amid its aggression against Ukraine.

Afghanistan Reports Hospital Attack by Pakistan Afghan authorities have claimed that Pakistan conducted an airstrike on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, resulting in approximately 400 fatalities and around 250 injuries. Hamdullah Fitrat, a deputy spokesperson for the Afghan government, condemned the attack, accusing Pakistan of targeting hospitals and civilian sites.

In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information dismissed the claims as false, asserting that Pakistani forces targeted military infrastructure and ammunition depots in Kabul. Afghan health officials have stated that there were no military installations near the hospital.

Ukraine Prepares for Airport Reopening The Ukrainian Ministry of Communities and Territories has initiated preparations for the resumption of airport operations, forming a special working group to develop proposals for restoring civil aviation flights within Ukrainian airspace. The group will also focus on measures to protect critical aviation infrastructure.

Previously, the Boryspil International Airport had expressed readiness to resume operations as soon as it was deemed safe. Following the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, Ukrainian airspace was closed to civilian aircraft, and discussions regarding the reopening of air travel remain ongoing.

Cuba is grappling with a nationwide blackout exacerbated by U.S. sanctions, while Trump delays his China visit amid rising tensions with Iran. Additionally, Hungary seeks EU tariff suspensions on fertilizers, and Afghanistan reports a significant attack attributed to Pakistan.
