The commander of Ukraine’s 11th Corps, Serhiy Sirchenko, has been relieved of his duties following the rapid loss of the city of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine. This decision was confirmed on April 11, when Sirchenko publicly thanked his subordinates for their collaboration during his nearly 500 days in command.
According to reports from Ukrainian media, the loss of Severodonetsk is cited as a significant factor in his dismissal. Sirchenko acknowledged the challenges faced during his tenure, emphasizing his presence on the front lines rather than in a supportive or administrative role.
“Nearly 500 days in command. Not in the rear. Not on paper. On the front lines – together. Together with you. In one of the fiercest sections of the front in this war. I was not a perfect commander. There are no perfect commanders in war. There were times I pressured. I made mistakes. I remained silent when I should have spoken. But one thing I know for sure: I never stood behind you.”
Reports indicate that Russian forces captured Severodonetsk by taking advantage of dense fog conditions in the Donetsk region during November and December 2025. The strategic significance of this city has heightened concerns regarding the ongoing conflict in the area.
The dismissal of Serhiy Sirchenko as commander of Ukraine's 11th Corps follows the strategic loss of Severodonetsk to Russian forces. His public acknowledgment of the challenges faced during his command highlights the complexities of military leadership in the ongoing conflict.
