Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand has announced the introduction of additional sanctions targeting Russian tankers linked to the country’s shadow fleet. This announcement highlights Canada’s ongoing efforts to counteract Russia’s evasion of international sanctions.
In a statement, Anand indicated that Canada is adding 100 vessels to its sanctions list, aimed at disrupting Russia’s ability to finance its military operations through oil and gas revenues. She emphasized that the shadow fleet is instrumental in transporting sanctioned goods and crude oil to various countries.
Anand reiterated that these sanctions are designed to limit Russia’s financial resources for its military activities and to protect civilian populations from harm. She stated, “Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to the sovereignty of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, who are resolutely defending their rights against the destructive and aggressive actions of Putin. As long as Russia continues its aggression, Canada will persist in increasing pressure through sanctions, in coordination with its allies and partners.”
To date, Canada has imposed sanctions on over 600 vessels involved in the transportation of goods benefiting Russia. This move underscores the country’s broader strategy to support Ukraine and curb the financial mechanisms that sustain the ongoing conflict.
