Australia Grants Humanitarian Visas to Iranian Women’s Football Team Amid Safety Concerns

Australia has issued humanitarian visas to five members of the Iranian women’s national football team due to concerns over potential persecution in their home country. This decision follows the players’ refusal to sing the national anthem during a recent match, a protest against the Iranian government’s actions.

On March 10, the Australian government confirmed the issuance of these visas after Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke revealed that negotiations had taken place with the players over several days. The athletes expressed fears for their safety upon returning to Iran, particularly in light of escalating military tensions involving the United States and Israel.

The Iranian women’s team participated in the opening round of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup earlier this month, where they lost all three group matches. During the tournament, the players chose not to sing the national anthem, stating they hoped their actions would benefit their country.

“While the offer remains open to other team members, it is quite possible, and even likely, that not every woman on the team will choose to take up the opportunity offered by Australia,” Burke noted.

Following their exit from the tournament, the team was expected to return to Iran. However, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Australia’s decision, suggesting that the players could face severe consequences upon their return.

Additionally, the president of the Iranian Football Federation was denied a visa when attempting to travel to Australia to facilitate the team’s return. Consequently, vice president Farideh Shojaei took the trip in his place.

As of now, the team remains in Australia, having initially planned to return to Iran via Dubai. However, they encountered complications as the United Arab Emirates denied them transit.
