Western Support Could Have Altered Ukraine’s War Outcome, Philosopher Argues

In a recent discussion, philosopher and public intellectual Emmanuel Lévi asserted that increased and more decisive support from Western nations could have enabled Ukraine to secure victory in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Lévi emphasized his unwavering belief in Ukraine’s potential for success, despite rising calls for compromises and peace negotiations in Europe and the United States.

“I have never stopped believing in Ukraine’s victory. For me, Putin has already lost,” Lévi stated, reflecting on the broader implications of the war. He argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to achieve any of his strategic objectives since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

Specifically, Lévi pointed out that Russia’s attempts to capture Kyiv, weaken NATO, and overthrow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have not materialized. He noted that the territories currently under Russian control do not correspond to the extensive resources expended by the Kremlin.

“Such power. Such technology. Such human losses, to gain so little. Most of the occupied territory was taken earlier, as you know. Therefore, he has lost,” Lévi emphasized.

He posited that the Kremlin’s reluctance to acknowledge defeat stems from fears of domestic repercussions. Lévi further argued that a more robust and strategic backing from Western allies could have led to a decisive Ukrainian victory.

“If we, the West, had provided a bit more help, a bit more support, if we had been a bit more decisive, Ukraine would have achieved a decisive victory. I am convinced of this,” he added.

While acknowledging the immense cost of the war in terms of human lives and psychological and social consequences, Lévi maintained that he sees no outcome other than Ukraine’s victory.

Philosopher Emmanuel Lévi argues that greater Western support could have enabled Ukraine to achieve victory over Russia. He emphasizes that Putin has failed to meet his strategic goals and expresses confidence in Ukraine's potential for success despite the ongoing challenges.
