Ukraine and U.S. Disagree on Security Guarantees Duration

During a press briefing at the Munich Security Conference, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted a disagreement with the United States regarding the duration of security guarantees for Ukraine following the cessation of hostilities with Russia.

Zelensky indicated that the U.S. is proposing security guarantees for a period significantly shorter than what Ukraine deems necessary. He stated, “Currently, we have a proposal for security guarantees from the U.S. for 15 years, while we are seeking assurances for 20 years or more—30, 50 years. We will see what the administration and Congress are willing to agree to.”

Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed concerns over the U.S. proposal for security guarantees, which he believes fall short of Ukraine’s needs. The ongoing negotiations may shape future defense strategies for Ukraine.
