Turkey Urges Gulf States to Restrain from Conflict with Iran Amid Rising Tensions

Turkey is actively working to dissuade Gulf countries from engaging in military action against Iran, aiming to prevent potential damage to the region’s energy infrastructure. Ankara is concerned that such a conflict could escalate into a prolonged war of attrition.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Turkish officials are calling for maximum restraint from Gulf nations. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has visited Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, and has conducted a series of phone conversations with regional counterparts.

The primary objective of these diplomatic efforts is to prevent the expansion of hostilities. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has emphasized the dangers of retaliatory strikes that could destabilize the entire region. He stated, “We do not want the war to turn into a war of attrition among the countries in the region. Retaliatory actions, especially against Gulf states, carry such a risk,” following a government meeting.

Despite calls for peace, major Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are expressing diminishing patience due to ongoing Iranian attacks on ports, energy facilities, and airports. These Arab nations are contemplating involvement in the conflict only if there is a critical threat to their security, particularly in response to Iran’s threats against vital energy and water infrastructure in the Gulf.

In related developments, Iran has publicly criticized a 15-point peace plan proposed by the United States, labeling its demands as “excessive.” Tehran has put forth its own conditions for a ceasefire, demanding an immediate halt to attacks and assurances for future security.

Additionally, Iranian authorities have implemented new regulations for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, now requiring direct coordination with Tehran for vessel transit through this crucial global trade route. Reports indicate that Iran has also declined negotiations with U.S. Special Representative Steve Vitkoff, preferring direct contacts with Vice President J.D. Vance over the current U.S. administration’s negotiators.

Turkey is working to prevent Gulf states from engaging in military action against Iran, fearing a prolonged conflict could destabilize the region. While Turkey advocates for restraint, Gulf nations are increasingly frustrated with Iranian aggression, complicating the situation further.
