Sources revealed that Trump discussed this plan with advisors in a dining area near the Oval Office about a year ago, suggesting he would hold a press conference to announce widespread pardons before his term ended.
During a recent meeting, Trump reportedly stated, “I will pardon everyone who came within 200 feet of the Oval Office.” This remark aligns with previous discussions he had with White House aides regarding the possibility of pardons, particularly when concerns arose about potential legal repercussions or congressional investigations related to their actions.
According to reports, Trump is known for making jokes about serious topics, which has led some aides to believe he is genuinely considering these pardons. However, the frequency of his mentions has also prompted some advisors to laugh off the idea.
Former administration officials noted that Trump contemplated pardoning White House staff following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot but ultimately did not proceed with any pardons at that time. He later expressed to his advisors that he should have issued pardons.
It is important to note that upon returning to the White House in 2025, Trump granted approximately 1,600 pardons, with around 1,500 of those related to individuals involved in the events of January 6.
