French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that deploying coalition troops to Ukraine would lead to an escalation of the ongoing conflict and a potential loss of control over the situation. He emphasized that such action is not being considered at this time.
During a recent address, Macron pointed out that there are currently no indications that Russia is seeking a genuine compromise in peace negotiations. He noted, “They are still bombing, they are bombing civilians, and they are stalling. What they are doing is accumulating all the concessions made by negotiators. They are simply dragging their feet. Therefore, we must organize ourselves to hold firm and resist.”
Macron acknowledged a lack of consensus among allies regarding the deployment of troops to Ukraine. He stated, “I think we would be responsible for provoking an escalation. I believe we would likely lose control of the situation. It is important for us to fulfill the package we voted on.”
Additionally, he highlighted the need for close coordination with the United States. Macron remarked, “I believe our main priority in the coming weeks should be to restore cooperation with the U.S. to jointly assess that there is no room for short-term negotiations. We must implement additional sanctions and measures against the shadow fleet and increase pressure on the Russian economy to halt this war, but from a much stronger position.”
