Vitaliy Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, has announced the cancellation of his attendance at this year’s Munich Security Conference, citing the need to focus on recovery efforts in the capital following recent Russian missile strikes.
In a statement made during a broadcast on the Kyiv television channel, Klitschko emphasized his long-standing participation in the conference, which gathers representatives from various nations to discuss pressing global issues. He noted that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine represents one of the most significant challenges facing the world today.
“The aggression of the Russian Federation against us, against Ukrainians, is a major concern. However, this year I have decided to forgo my visit to Munich. My brother, Volodymyr, is handling many meetings there, while I remain in Kyiv. We face numerous challenges here, and the support from our partners is crucial. We are grateful to the mayors and sister cities that have reached out to assist us,” Klitschko stated.
Klitschko addressed the current heating situation in Kyiv, revealing that 700 buildings are without heat following the latest attacks. Efforts are underway to maintain electricity supply, allowing residents to use electric appliances for warmth.
“Kyiv has experienced the highest number of attacks since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Currently, 700 buildings are without heating. I hope that services will be restored within two to three days. The affected areas include Darnytskyi, Desnianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Pecherskyi, and Solomianskyi districts. We are doing everything possible to ensure electricity supply so that people can stay warm,” he added.
He highlighted that municipal workers are operating around the clock to restore water, heat, and electricity services, although their efforts are hindered by pressures from law enforcement agencies.
“On one hand, the state is providing assistance through Ukrzaliznytsia and various state enterprises, as well as teams from the State Emergency Service. On the other hand, the prosecutor’s office has initiated criminal cases against Kyivvodokanal regarding the procurement of generators, which are being confiscated. The same issue applies to Kyivteploenergo. In total, there are 1,600 criminal cases opened against the city. However, only eight cases have reached court, with just two resulting in verdicts. It appears that politics is playing a role even in these challenging times for the central government,” Klitschko remarked.
The Munich Security Conference is scheduled to take place from February 13 to 15, focusing on European security and the role of the United States, as well as the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Historically, Munich has been a pivotal location in global politics. In 1938, Europe conceded Czechoslovakia to Hitler, while in 2007, Vladimir Putin announced a course towards the effective restoration of the Russian Empire. In 2022, discussions centered on how to halt Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This year, Munich may once again serve as a significant platform for international dialogue.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has canceled his participation in the Munich Security Conference to prioritize recovery efforts in Kyiv following recent Russian attacks. He highlighted ongoing challenges, including heating shortages affecting hundreds of buildings and the pressures faced by municipal services amid legal scrutiny.
