Iran to Potentially Open Strait of Hormuz Ahead of US Negotiations

Iran is considering the permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic as early as April 9 or 10, coinciding with upcoming negotiations with the United States. This development comes as part of a broader diplomatic effort between the two nations.

A senior Iranian official indicated that the strait would operate in a “limited and controlled manner.” The potential opening is set to occur just before a scheduled meeting between representatives from the US and Iran in Pakistan.

“If an understanding is reached regarding the framework for negotiations, the strait could be opened ‘in a limited, controlled manner,'” the official explained.

However, the passage through the strait will be subject to specific conditions. Notably, coordination with Iranian military forces will be mandatory for all vessels navigating the area.

“Coordination with Iranian military will be obligatory for all ships. The ceasefire remains fragile, yet we prefer lasting peace. However, Iran is not afraid to return to conflict if the US chooses that path,” the official stated.

In the context of the ongoing ceasefire between the US and Iran, it is important to note that on the night of April 8, just hours before the expiration of a US ultimatum, President Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran in exchange for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Following this announcement, Trump claimed that the United States had achieved a “complete and final victory” after reaching an agreement with Iran for a temporary cessation of hostilities. Interestingly, Iranian officials echoed similar sentiments of victory.

Moreover, reports indicate that the first direct talks between Washington and Tehran since the onset of hostilities are scheduled for April 10 in Pakistan’s capital. The US delegation is expected to be led by Vice President J.D. Vance.

Iran is poised to open the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic in a controlled manner, aligning with imminent US-Iran negotiations. This move follows a temporary ceasefire agreement and marks a significant moment in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
