Hungary’s Support for Russia Raises Concerns in Europe

The Hungarian government’s policies under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are increasingly viewed as advantageous to Russia, particularly as Budapest continues to obstruct European Union initiatives aimed at supporting Ukraine.

Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski, has stated that Hungary’s stance creates significant barriers to European unity. He emphasized that the actions of the Hungarian government have direct implications for regional security.

“Moscow supports Orbán because he sabotages the European Union, blocking sanctions and funding for Ukraine,” Sikorski remarked.

He further noted a direct correlation between support for Orbán and assistance to Moscow, asserting that this relationship should not be overlooked when evaluating the actions of European politicians.

“Thus, anyone who supports Orbán is aiding Moscow. It is that simple,” Sikorski stated.

Internally, Orbán’s position has weakened amid an electoral campaign. Recently, he faced unexpected boos at a rally in Győr, a city previously considered a stronghold for his party. In response to the protests, he accused attendees of working for Ukraine.

Polling data indicates a decline in the ruling coalition’s approval ratings. The opposition party, Tisza, led by Péter Mándy, has widened its lead over the governing coalition to 23% among active voters, potentially positioning it for a constitutional majority.

With the possibility of electoral defeat looming in Budapest, there are speculations that Orbán may refuse to acknowledge the election results and resort to radical measures to maintain power, reminiscent of his actions in 2006.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is facing criticism for policies that hinder EU support for Ukraine, raising concerns about regional security and electoral challenges. Opposition parties are gaining ground as Orbán's approval ratings decline, leading to speculation about his potential responses to electoral defeat.
