Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, has accused the Baltic countries of aligning with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in ongoing energy disputes with Budapest.
Szijjártó’s remarks came in response to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who expressed shame over his country purchasing cheap Russian oil, suggesting it undermines energy independence.
In his defense, Szijjártó asserted that Hungary will not allow external forces to dictate its energy policies. He stated, “The Baltic states have long been playing to Zelensky’s tune, but Hungary will not succumb to the Ukrainian president’s pressure.”
The Hungarian diplomat emphasized that no one can compel Hungary to purchase energy resources at inflated prices. “No one can tell us whom we should or should not buy oil from, nor can anyone force us to pay more for oil than we have in the past,” he remarked.
Szijjártó also highlighted that families in many European nations are facing utility costs three to four times higher than those in Hungary. “We will defend our lower energy costs and uphold our sovereignty!” he concluded.
