The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has accused Ukraine of engaging in political blackmail regarding the halt of Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline.
Szijjarto claimed that Ukraine is attempting to manipulate Hungary and Slovakia politically. He stated, “There are no technical, engineering, or physical reasons for the suspension of oil deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline. The reason is purely political. The Ukrainians want us to head into elections with fuel prices at 1000 forints, thereby assisting the Tisza party, but we are not foolish,” as per his remarks.
Additionally, Szijjarto asserted that Hungary would take measures to protect itself and expressed confidence that oil and fuel supplies to both Hungary and Slovakia would resume. He warned, “If the Ukrainians continue to obstruct us, we are prepared to take further joint countermeasures.”
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Hungary has not abandoned Russian oil and continues to maintain active trade relations with Russia, showing no inclination to seek alternative gas and oil sources.
Last year, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Budapest does not plan to cease importing Russian oil, arguing that other supply options are less reliable.
