Hungarian Opposition Leader Accuses Government of Inviting Russian Intelligence

Peter Madyar, leader of the Hungarian opposition party Tisza, has accused Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of inviting representatives from Russian intelligence to influence the upcoming parliamentary elections in Hungary.

Madyar stated that Orbán is the first Hungarian leader since former Prime Minister János Kádár to extend such an invitation to Russian officials. He has called for an immediate cessation of this alleged interference.

“According to information from several sources, men from the Russian military intelligence (GRU) arrived in Budapest a few weeks ago with the aim of affecting the outcomes of the Hungarian elections. Similar actions have been reported previously in Moldova,” Madyar claimed.

The opposition leader characterized the situation as “absolutely unprecedented,” asserting that a government on the verge of collapse would seek to manipulate elections through foreign intervention.

Madyar urged Orbán to terminate this operation and expel the Russian intelligence personnel who allegedly entered Hungary under diplomatic cover.

Additionally, he has called for the National Security Committee to convene and allocate funding to investigate the matter.

“As a future head of government, I demand immediate clarification on what information the Hungarian government has received from allied services regarding Russian interference and why no actions have been taken in light of this unprecedented Russian operation,” Madyar stated.

In closing, Madyar emphasized the need for Hungary to have leadership that does not expose the country to threats from the East, whether from Russian President Vladimir Putin or Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“It is in Hungary’s interest to remain a stable, predictable partner that allies consider reliable,” he concluded.
