German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed strong disapproval of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent actions regarding the blocking of financial aid to Ukraine, suggesting that Orban may face significant repercussions for his decisions.
Merz characterized Orban’s move as a serious breach of loyalty to the European Union, emphasizing that member states are expected to support one another and uphold mutual agreements. He stated, “What Orban has done undermines some of the fundamental principles of the bloc.”
In his remarks, Merz pointed out that this breach could damage both the effectiveness and the reputation of the EU as a whole. He reiterated that the European Commission has been tasked with exploring additional options for delivering the promised funding to Ukraine, expressing hope that the EU can expedite these payments. The funding goal remains clear: two-thirds for military assistance and one-third for civilian needs.
Addressing the implications for Orban, Merz assured that he would raise the issue during upcoming budget discussions, indicating that the EU would not let Orban’s actions go unpunished. He stated, “We agree that what happened in the European Council is unacceptable, and it will have consequences that extend far beyond this single incident. When the budget formation begins, we will need to have a fundamental discussion about this matter again.”
