The President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, has expressed concerns regarding the potential easing of US sanctions on Russian oil, stating that such a move could significantly harm Ukraine.
Stubb articulated that the decision would effectively bolster Russia’s military capabilities, thereby undermining Ukraine’s defense efforts. He emphasized the necessity of providing comprehensive support to Ukraine, both financially and militarily, while simultaneously exerting maximum pressure on Russia. He remarked, “This causes enormous damage to Ukraine because it essentially feeds the Russian military machine. From the very beginning, I have maintained that we need to do two things: provide Ukraine with maximum support and apply as much pressure on Russia as possible, with sanctions playing a key role in this.”
When questioned about the likelihood of the US reinstating sanctions against Russia after the crisis with Iran, Stubb acknowledged the uncertainty of the situation. He stated, “I do not have a crystal ball,” indicating that predicting future actions is challenging.
Stubb did commend US President Donald Trump for implementing sanctions against Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil in 2025 and for leveraging US tariffs to encourage India to reduce its import of Russian energy resources. However, he reiterated his skepticism regarding the reinstatement of sanctions, concluding, “At this stage, we simply do not know.”
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has raised alarms about the potential easing of US sanctions on Russian oil, warning it could undermine Ukraine's military efforts. He emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine and the need for sustained pressure on Russia through sanctions.
