EU Diplomat Defends Maritime Security Efforts Amid US Criticism

The European Union’s top diplomat has asserted the importance of mutual cooperation in maritime security, particularly in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This statement comes in response to criticisms from the United States and Gulf nations regarding Europe’s perceived lack of action in ensuring safe navigation in the region.

In an interview with journalist Becky Anderson, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell defended Europe’s initiatives aimed at safeguarding shipping routes in the Strait. He emphasized that security efforts should be reciprocal, highlighting the need for Gulf countries to engage more actively in addressing challenges posed by Russian aggression.

“We have not seen Gulf nations assisting us with issues related to Russia; this cannot be a one-way street,” Borrell stated.

The security situation in the Strait of Hormuz has recently become a point of contention between the US and Europe. Reports indicate that former President Donald Trump had previously issued an ultimatum to European allies, urging them to assume greater responsibility for regional security.

Following this, Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed technical aspects concerning the potential reopening of this vital waterway. Meanwhile, Starmer expressed frustration over the political maneuvers of US and Russian leaders, stating he is tired of their influence on global energy prices.

The EU's foreign policy chief has defended Europe's role in ensuring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz amid US criticisms. He called for greater cooperation from Gulf nations in addressing regional security challenges, particularly those stemming from Russian actions.
