China has announced the appointment of a special envoy to the Middle East, aimed at mediating escalating tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran. This initiative comes as part of Beijing’s efforts to foster dialogue and prevent further conflict in the region.
During a conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized China’s readiness to play a constructive role in peace negotiations. “China will send a special envoy for Middle East affairs to the countries in the region for mediation,” Wang stated.
Details regarding the identity of the envoy and the specific countries to be visited have not been disclosed. However, Beijing has urged all parties to refrain from using force.
Wang reiterated that China strongly encourages a swift return to dialogue and negotiations to avert further escalation of tensions. He also reaffirmed China’s support for Iran’s sovereignty while calling on the United States and Israel to cease military strikes.
China has consistently positioned itself as a “force for peace” in such conflicts, highlighting its diplomatic approach. The Chinese government has previously expressed concern over the situation in the Middle East, labeling Israeli strikes on Iranian territory as unacceptable and calling for an immediate ceasefire.
In a shift in rhetoric, Beijing has recently underscored the importance of adherence to international law by all parties involved in the conflict. This comes in light of heightened fears of a large-scale war, particularly concerning the potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which could critically impact global oil supplies.
Additionally, China has responded sharply to threats from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding sanctions on countries maintaining economic ties with Tehran, emphasizing the unacceptability of unilateral sanctions.
China's appointment of a special envoy to the Middle East reflects its intent to mediate rising tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. The initiative underscores Beijing's commitment to fostering dialogue and maintaining regional stability amidst escalating conflict.
