Circle’s USYC Token Surpasses BlackRock in Tokenized Treasury Market

Circle’s USYC token, a product of its acquisition of Hashnote, has reached a supply of approximately $2.2 billion, positioning it as the leading tokenized U.S. Treasury fund. This development marks a significant shift in the market, as USYC has overtaken BlackRock’s USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL), which currently holds around $2 billion in assets.

The tokenized U.S. Treasury market is gaining momentum, with USYC’s growth attributed to its integration on the BNB Chain. This platform, operated by Binance, has facilitated the use of USYC as off-exchange collateral for institutional derivatives trading. Since its launch in July, USYC’s supply on BNB has surged to $1.84 billion, reflecting strong demand from both crypto traders and institutional investors.

Tokenized real-world assets, including Treasury bills and money-market funds, are increasingly being utilized as yield-generating collateral. The advantages of blockchain-based tokens include near-instant settlement, transparent reserves, and continuous access, making them an attractive option for investors looking to optimize capital efficiency. By using Treasury-backed tokens, investors can earn interest while employing these assets in trading strategies.

Circle’s CEO, Jeremy Allaire, emphasized the rapid growth of tokenized treasuries and repo as collateral, describing it as a significant emerging use case in the financial landscape. The broader tokenized Treasury market has also reached a record high of over $11 billion, with an increase of approximately $2.5 billion, or 27%, since the beginning of the year.

Despite a downturn in the crypto market in January, the interest in tokenized Treasuries appears to have grown as investors seek stable yields while awaiting opportunities to reinvest in digital assets. The competition in this space has intensified, with BUIDL’s market share decreasing from a peak of 46% in May to 18% currently, as new entrants emerge.

As the market continues to evolve, the implications for both traditional and digital asset investors are significant, highlighting a shift towards innovative financial instruments that blend the benefits of blockchain technology with established financial assets.

Circle's USYC token has surpassed BlackRock's BUIDL fund, reaching $2.2 billion in supply. This shift reflects growing interest in tokenized U.S. Treasuries as a viable investment option in the evolving financial landscape.
