YASNO CEO Explains Rising Electricity Bills Amid Power Outages

The CEO of YASNO, Sergey Kovalenko, has addressed the reasons behind the recent increase in electricity bills for consumers, particularly during periods of power outages. He identified several key factors contributing to this phenomenon.

Firstly, Kovalenko pointed out that the starting current of electrical appliances plays a significant role. When power is restored, devices such as refrigerators and pumps can draw three to seven times more electricity during their initial startup. If this occurs multiple times a day, the cumulative energy consumption can rise substantially.

The second factor is related to individual consumption patterns. Kovalenko noted that when electricity is restored, some consumers may only use essential appliances, while others may turn on multiple devices simultaneously, leading to increased demand.

Another reason for the higher bills is the meter readings. The CEO emphasized the importance of timely reporting of meter readings, as failure to do so can result in charges based on average consumption, which may not accurately reflect actual usage.

Additionally, Kovalenko mentioned that a faulty meter could miscalculate consumption. In such cases, he advised consumers to contact their local energy provider for verification.

Kovalenko clarified that the increase in bills is not paradoxical, stating, “It is not a case of ‘no electricity, higher bills,’ but rather a result of cold weather, concentrated consumption during power hours, and individual user behavior. The number of hours with electricity does not equate to the total kilowatt-hours consumed. Warmer temperatures will lead to lower bills, especially if there is more electricity available and fewer disruptions due to attacks.”

In related news, the Ukrainian government is currently reviewing the rules for calculating and adjusting utility costs amid the ongoing state of war. This includes mechanisms for recalculating bills in cases where services are not provided or are of low quality. Significant changes are also anticipated for the heating season, with new guidelines expected to affect billing for insufficient heating in residences.

YASNO's CEO Sergey Kovalenko has outlined several factors contributing to rising electricity bills during power outages, including high starting currents of appliances and individual consumption habits. The Ukrainian government is also reviewing utility billing practices amid ongoing conflicts.
