Telegram, the messaging platform facing increasing restrictions in Russia, has released a significant update aimed at enhancing its censorship resistance. The new protocol is designed to allow users in Russia to access the service despite ongoing efforts to block it.
In a recent statement, Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov urged Russian users to update their applications to maintain connectivity amid the ban. He also recommended that users install multiple VPN services and proxy servers, advising them to assist friends and family in doing the same. Durov cautioned against using Russian applications while connected to a VPN, as these apps may report usage to authorities, potentially leading to further restrictions.
Durov expressed satisfaction with the current user engagement, noting that a significant number of people have adopted these measures. He highlighted that this “digital resistance” has allowed Telegram usage in Russia to remain stable over the past week, despite the complete ban.
However, many users in Russia continue to report difficulties accessing Telegram. This is attributed to the Russian government’s extensive blocking of proxy servers, which are essential for circumventing restrictions. Reports indicate that certain Russian applications, particularly those associated with major banks, have become particularly aggressive in detecting and reporting VPN usage.
It is worth noting that the decision to block Telegram was implemented earlier than anticipated, with the service effectively rendered non-functional in Russia as of April 11. Initially, the government had planned to initiate the ban on April 1.
The situation has sparked protests advocating for a “free internet” across several major Russian cities. Demonstrations held on March 29 resulted in the detention of between three and twelve individuals, with most protesters being dispersed by authorities.
Telegram has introduced a new protocol to enhance its censorship resistance in Russia, where the messaging app faces significant restrictions. Despite these efforts, many users still experience access issues due to government actions against proxy servers.
