The CEO of German defense contractor Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, has made dismissive remarks regarding the capabilities of Ukrainian drone manufacturers, comparing their production to a “Lego game” and asserting that their technological advancements do not match those of major Western firms.
In an interview with journalist Simon Shuster, Papperger was asked about the implications of Ukraine’s progress in drone manufacturing for Rheinmetall’s business model. He responded by questioning who could be considered the largest Ukrainian drone producers.
When companies such as Fire Point and Skyfall were mentioned, Papperger’s comments were notably disparaging. He referred to these manufacturers as “Ukrainian housewives” who, according to him, use 3D printers in their kitchens to produce drone components.
“It’s like playing with Lego. What innovation is coming from Ukraine? They lack any technological breakthrough,” he stated. Papperger expressed confidence that Ukrainian developments lag significantly behind those of industry leaders like Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics.
“They make innovations with their small drones and say, ‘Wow!’ And that’s great. But so what? This is not at the level of technologies from Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, or Rheinmetall,” he concluded.
Following these remarks, Simon Shuster shared on social media that he had spoken with a representative from Skyfall regarding Papperger’s comments. The representative responded, “If a drone created by these ‘housewives’ is sufficient to destroy tanks and artillery… I think we have officially entered the era of ‘housewives.'”
Rheinmetall's CEO has criticized Ukrainian drone manufacturers, likening their work to a children's game and claiming a lack of technological innovation. This has sparked a response from industry representatives, highlighting the effectiveness of Ukrainian drones in combat.
