EU Envoy to Discuss Tariffs with US Following Trump’s Rate Hike

The European Union is dispatching a representative to Washington for discussions following President Donald Trump’s recent implementation of global tariffs. Initially set at 10%, these tariffs were subsequently raised to 15% for all countries.

Brussels has appointed Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, to lead the delegation. Merz emphasized the necessity of a unified European stance on the matter, stating, “Tariff policy is a responsibility of the European Union, not individual member states. I will go to Washington with a coordinated European position.”

Merz noted that Trump’s decision appears to maintain existing sector-specific tariffs, including those on automobiles, steel, and aluminum. He pointed out that the new 10% import levy on all countries was increased to 15% shortly thereafter.

In his remarks, Merz expressed concern over the ongoing uncertainty surrounding tariffs, describing it as a significant challenge for both European and American economies. He stated, “The greatest poison for the economies of Europe and the US is the persistent uncertainty regarding tariffs. This uncertainty must be addressed.”

The EU is sending Friedrich Merz to Washington to negotiate on tariffs following President Trump's increase of global tariffs to 15%. Merz aims to present a unified European response to the economic implications of these policies.
