During a recent visit to Hungary, US Vice President Jay D. Vance expressed skepticism regarding the ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, particularly concerning territorial disputes.
Vance remarked on the futility of bargaining over small areas of land, implying that Ukraine should consider making territorial concessions. He stated, “At this stage, we are talking about negotiations over a few square kilometers of territory in one direction or another. Is it worth the loss of hundreds of thousands of additional young Russian and Ukrainian men? Is it worth more months or even years of high energy prices and economic devastation? We believe the answer is a resounding ‘no.'”
The Vice President emphasized the need for both parties to reach an agreement independently, stating, “For a tango, it takes two. Therefore, the Russians and Ukrainians must negotiate among themselves.”
He also acknowledged the roles of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and former President Donald Trump in facilitating peace talks, but reiterated that the ultimate responsibility lies with the two nations involved.
