Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed comments made by Rheinmetall’s CEO regarding the country’s drone manufacturers. In response to remarks suggesting that Ukrainian producers are merely “housewives with 3D printers in their kitchens,” Zelensky asserted that if every Ukrainian housewife can indeed produce drones, then they should also be capable of leading Rheinmetall.
“I welcome this high level of our Ukrainian defense industry,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing the need for competition based on results rather than words. He pointed out that the effectiveness of Ukrainian technologies is evident on the battlefield, in the air, and at sea.
The president further highlighted the unique experience of Ukraine’s defense sector, asserting, “I am confident that our defense industry is already claiming its place in the world regarding certain systems and approaches. We are exclusive in that we possess the relevant experience.”
These comments follow disparaging remarks made by Rheinmetall’s CEO, Armin Papperger, who criticized Ukrainian drone manufacturers, including Fire Point and Skyfall, as lacking technological advancement compared to firms like Lockheed Martin. Papperger described their production capabilities as akin to playing with building blocks.
In a subsequent statement released on March 29, Rheinmetall expressed deep respect for Ukraine and acknowledged the invaluable contributions of every Ukrainian in the fight against Russian aggression. The company noted that the innovative spirit of the nation inspires them, effectively distancing itself from the earlier comments made by its CEO, although no formal apology was issued.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has countered Rheinmetall's CEO's dismissive remarks about local drone manufacturers, asserting the strength and uniqueness of Ukraine's defense industry. Following the controversy, Rheinmetall has expressed respect for Ukraine and its contributions to the ongoing conflict.
