The Ukrainian Parliament’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, has raised concerns regarding the reported abduction of residents from the village of Sopych in the Sumy region by Russian military forces. According to Lubinets, 19 Ukrainian citizens were allegedly taken from the Esman community, with initial reports indicating a loss of communication with these individuals.
Lubinets emphasized that these actions constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law, specifically the forced deportation of civilians, which disregards the laws and customs of war. He stated, “I have urgently contacted the human rights commissioner in the Russian Federation, demanding an immediate visit to the Ukrainian citizens, followed by a report on their health and living conditions, and most importantly, ensuring their swift return home.”
The situation has drawn attention as media outlets reported that the abducted individuals had previously refused evacuation and remained in the border village. Interviews with them later appeared on the Russian propaganda channel “Vesti,” suggesting they were relocated to a settlement in the Bryansk region of Russia.
Serhiy Minakov, the head of the Esman community, confirmed that communication with the residents had been lost prior to the reports of their abduction. The Ukrainian government continues to advocate for adherence to international law and the protection of its citizens’ rights.
