Ukrainian strategic advisor Oleksandr Kamyshin has reacted to remarks made by Armin Papperger, CEO of the German defense company Rheinmetall, regarding Ukraine’s drone manufacturing sector. Papperger previously likened the industry to ‘Ukrainian housewives’ using 3D printers to produce drone components.
In a post on X, Kamyshin emphasized the significant role of Ukrainian women in military production, stating, ‘I frequently observe Ukrainian women working alongside men. They are remarkable homemakers but must also labor diligently in military factories. They deserve respect, Rheinmetall.’
Later that day, Rheinmetall issued a statement expressing its ‘highest respect’ for the efforts of the Ukrainian people in defending against Russian aggression. The company acknowledged the invaluable contributions of both men and women in Ukraine, noting, ‘Ukraine fights effectively even with limited resources. The innovative spirit and fighting morale of the Ukrainian people inspire us. We are grateful for the opportunity to support Ukraine with the resources we have.’
Papperger’s initial comments, made during an interview with The Atlantic, reflected skepticism about the innovative use of drones in warfare, describing the process as akin to ‘playing with Legos.’ He questioned whether drones would have a revolutionary impact on the defense industry.
When discussing Ukrainian drone manufacturers such as Fire Point and Skyfall, Papperger stated, ‘These are Ukrainian housewives. They have 3D printers in their kitchens and produce components for drones. This is not innovation.’
In early March, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine would assist Middle Eastern countries in defending against Iranian attacks, with Ukrainian experts set to work on-site following drone strikes that occurred after the U.S.-Israeli military operation on February 28.
Ukrainian advisor Oleksandr Kamyshin has defended the country's drone industry against comments from Rheinmetall's CEO, who downplayed its innovation. Rheinmetall later acknowledged the significant contributions of Ukrainians in the defense sector.
