Ukrainian Military Training Abroad Continues Despite Reductions

The basic training of Ukrainian military personnel abroad remains active, although the scale has significantly decreased over the past two years. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are enhancing their capabilities and shifting training to safer regions.

Training for Ukrainian servicemen in NATO and EU countries is ongoing. By 2026, basic training activities are scheduled to take place in three EU countries, supported by four NATO member states, according to statements made by military spokesperson Oleksandr Lykhoviy.

Ukrainian defenders continue to familiarize themselves with foreign weaponry and undergo leadership and instructor training abroad. “This includes specialized training on foreign weapon systems and military equipment, as well as the preparation of commanders, senior sergeants, and instructors, along with basic military training,” Lykhoviy noted.

The process has been optimized, with specific partner countries identified that specialize in certain training areas or finance training in third countries.

According to Lykhoviy, the main advantages of international training remain the quality of the logistical support, skilled basic-level instructors, and the absence of interruptions due to air alerts. As a result, AFU training in NATO countries continues, and the General Staff expresses gratitude to its partners for this opportunity.

However, considering a range of assessments, it can be stated that the AFU is capable of preparing the necessary reinforcements independently, adapting to the demands of modern high-tech warfare while leveraging their invaluable combat experience, he emphasized.

In terms of advantages of training within Ukraine, the spokesperson indicated that training grounds inside the country are enhancing security measures, with much of the training now taking place in western regions. Additionally, basic military training is partially conducted directly at combat brigade bases.

“The critical importance of changing training locations is the better integration of combat experience by our instructors at training centers. We also take into account the legal requirements and regulatory frameworks of many EU and NATO countries,” the General Staff spokesperson stated.

Lykhoviy explained that instructors in Ukraine can conduct sessions with intensive use of drones, electronic warfare tools, and night shooting without interruptions. Furthermore, local training does not require complicated logistics.

The training of Ukrainian military personnel abroad continues, albeit at a reduced scale, as the Armed Forces enhance their capabilities domestically. Training is increasingly conducted in safer regions within Ukraine, integrating combat experience and adapting to modern warfare demands.
