General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has spoken about the issue of military personnel leaving their units without authorization. He emphasized ongoing efforts to encourage these individuals to return to service.
Syrskyi noted that many soldiers are rejoining reserve battalions, where they are reassigned to various units. In response to questions regarding whether penalties for unauthorized departures should be stricter, he stated, “I am not an advocate of harsh measures. Our legislation is already quite strict regarding those who violate this law.”
The general highlighted the importance of creating conditions that would reduce the number of such incidents throughout the mobilization process. He identified the reluctance to serve and concerns for personal safety as primary reasons behind these departures.
To mitigate these issues, Syrskyi suggested that the mobilization process should be made as comfortable as possible for those involved. He remarked, “The main reason for unauthorized departures is the unwillingness to serve and fears for one’s life. The transition into military life, from the Territorial Recruitment Centers to training facilities, must be as painless as possible.”
He urged staff at the Territorial Recruitment Centers to treat individuals being mobilized with empathy and respect. Furthermore, Syrskyi stressed the need for improved conditions, stating, “We are constantly working on this, with efforts from the President of Ukraine, the Minister of Defense, and the command of the Armed Forces to ensure proper conditions.”
This improvement encompasses various aspects, including accommodation, safety during training, and provisions for food. According to Syrskyi, the training provided at these centers meets all the challenges that mobilized personnel will face on the battlefield.
General Oleksandr Syrskyi addressed the issue of military desertion in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a more supportive mobilization process. He outlined strategies aimed at improving conditions for soldiers to encourage their return to service.
