Ukrainian military operations continue to thwart Russian attempts to seize control of the Donetsk region, with successful counterattacks reported by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
According to Oleksiy Palisa, Deputy Head of the President’s Office, Russian officials have repeatedly made public demands for concessions from Ukraine, often accompanied by threats and deadlines. This pattern of negotiation, he noted, typically arises when Russia perceives its military position as weakening.
From a military perspective, Palisa asserted that Russia is unlikely to reach the administrative boundaries of the Donetsk region in the near future. He cited statistics from the previous year, indicating an average of approximately 120 enemy casualties per square kilometer of occupied Ukrainian territory along the front lines.
In particular, the main area of Russian offensive last year, the Pokrovsk direction, saw around 160 casualties per square kilometer of captured land. This trend has intensified in the first quarter of 2026, especially in the Donetsk region, where the casualty rate has escalated significantly.
Currently, the statistics indicate that Russian forces are suffering approximately 316 casualties per square kilometer in the Donetsk area. This marks a near doubling of losses compared to the previous year’s main offensive direction, with overall casualties along the front lines in Donbas increasing nearly threefold.
Palisa emphasized that these figures reflect the limited success of Russian operations in the Donetsk direction, noting that while there have been minimal tactical gains in certain areas, there are no substantial operational achievements. He concluded that Russian forces appear disconnected from the reality of their situation.
Despite the challenges faced on the front lines, Palisa acknowledged the significant contributions of Ukrainian soldiers in achieving these results.
