The Russian Black Sea Fleet is facing new challenges as Ukrainian drones targeted a frigate in the port of Novorossiysk on April 5. This incident marks a significant escalation in naval confrontations, as the fleet has already lost control over key maritime areas.
Reports indicate that the frigate hit was likely the “Admiral Essen,” one of the last two remaining Project 11356M frigates in the Black Sea. These vessels are among the largest combat ships in the Russian fleet following the sinking of the cruiser “Moskva” in April 2022.
The frigate, armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, was reportedly preparing to launch strikes against Ukraine when it was attacked. Positioned near the outer breakwater, it became vulnerable to aerial assaults from the sea.
Ukrainian drones successfully navigated past Russian missile defenses and anti-aircraft fire, hitting their target. Concurrently, strikes were also directed at oil infrastructure in the region, igniting large fires.
As the situation evolves, the Russian Black Sea Fleet has relocated from occupied Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, seeking refuge from Ukrainian maritime drones. However, this port has now become a perilous haven.
Ukrainian forces are deploying three types of drones: surface (USV), underwater (AUV), and aerial (UAV). The protective breakwaters of Novorossiysk have turned into a trap for the Russian fleet.
Russian submarines are now forced to submerge close to the docks to reduce visibility, but experts warn that it is only a matter of time before Ukrainian drones inflict significant damage.
Geographically, Novorossiysk is situated 200-350 nautical miles from Ukrainian positions, leaving little room for retreat. Other Russian ports along the Black Sea, such as Sochi and Ochamchire in Georgia, lack the necessary infrastructure for military operations. Additionally, any exit through the Volga-Don Canal to the Caspian Sea could be irreversible.
This situation has effectively trapped Russian vessels, facing drone attacks in the port and surface threats at sea.
Ukrainian drones have struck a Russian frigate in Novorossiysk, highlighting the vulnerabilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. With limited options for retreat, the fleet faces increasing threats both in port and at sea.
