Ukraine Condemns Hungary’s Seizure of State Bank Assets

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently addressed the ongoing situation regarding the assets of Oschadbank, which were confiscated by Hungary. During his remarks on March 10, he likened Hungary’s actions to banditry, emphasizing the need for European partners to speak out against such behavior.

Zelensky stated, “I think your example of banditry is very appropriate,” in response to journalists’ inquiries about Budapest’s conduct. He mentioned that he has discussed the matter with various partners but did not specify who they were. He reiterated the importance of vocal support from Europe, saying, “Once again, I officially and publicly repeat what I have told many of our friends: Europe needs to do one thing today – not to remain silent.”

Hungarian Transport Minister János Lázár confirmed on the same day that Budapest would not return the funds seized from Ukrainian armored vehicles, which include approximately $40 million, €35 million, and nine kilograms of gold belonging to Oschadbank. Lázár stated, “We will not return the money to them. The funds will remain here for now as we await the reopening of the pipeline and new Ukrainian financial supplies through Hungary.”

The incident involves the detention of seven Ukrainian citizens, employees of Oschadbank, who were transporting the funds between Austria and Ukraine. These individuals and their escort were previously deported from Hungary. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized Lázár’s statement as an admission of hostage-taking and theft, labeling the actions as “state terrorism.”

On March 6, Sybiha expressed that the Hungarian authorities had effectively taken hostages, prompting the National Police of Ukraine to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the abduction of the Ukrainian citizens and the bank’s vehicle on Hungarian territory. In light of these developments, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has advised its citizens to avoid travel to Hungary or transit through the country.

The ongoing dispute between Ukraine and Hungary escalates as President Zelensky condemns Hungary's seizure of Oschadbank assets. Ukrainian officials label the actions as state terrorism, urging European partners to respond.
