UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans for a forthcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the importance of continued support for Ukraine amidst escalating geopolitical tensions.
During a press briefing, Starmer highlighted the necessity of maintaining dialogue with leaders from the Gulf region, Europe, and beyond. On March 16, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, reinforcing collaborative efforts to address the ongoing crisis.
“I will be meeting with President Zelensky soon, as it is vital that we keep our focus on supporting Ukraine. We cannot allow the war in the Gulf to become an unexpected advantage for Putin,” Starmer stated.
Last week, President Zelensky engaged in discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron. At a joint press conference, Zelensky remarked on the potential economic impact of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil, noting that lifting these sanctions could enrich the Russian budget by approximately $10 billion.
The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, issued a new license on March 12, permitting countries to temporarily purchase certain Russian oil products that are currently stranded at sea. This license specifically applies to crude oil or oil products loaded onto vessels as of March 12, allowing deliveries until April 11.
Simultaneously, the conflict in the Middle East has intensified since February 28, with the U.S. and Israel conducting strikes against Iran. In retaliation, Tehran has targeted Israeli and American military bases in the Gulf region. This ongoing conflict has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passageway for approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky to reinforce support for Ukraine amid rising geopolitical tensions. The announcement follows discussions on the implications of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and ongoing military actions in the Middle East.
