As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reiterated Washington’s commitment to pressuring Moscow while supplying arms to Ukraine. He emphasized that the conflict lacks a military solution and must ultimately be resolved through negotiations.
Rubio noted that the Trump administration has intensified sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting the state-owned oil company Rosneft at the end of last year. He confirmed that the U.S. continues to provide military support to Ukraine without offering any military assistance to Russia or imposing sanctions on Kyiv.
According to Rubio, the United States is currently the only nation capable of facilitating dialogue between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators. He asserted that no other entity, including the United Nations or the European Union, has the ability to mediate effectively, as Russia is unwilling to engage in discussions with them.
The Secretary of State highlighted that the war will not conclude through military means and must be settled via negotiations. However, he acknowledged that President Trump’s patience is limited, although he refrained from predicting when the White House might alter its approach.
Rubio expressed that President Trump is deeply frustrated by the ongoing conflict, describing it as “senseless and bloody.” He pointed out that approximately 7,000 to 8,000 soldiers are dying each week, and the destruction in Ukraine is escalating daily, which will have long-lasting implications for future generations.
Addressing the issue of Russia’s accountability for attacks on civilian infrastructure, Rubio stated that U.S. support has been crucial for Ukraine’s defense. He reminded listeners of the military aid, intelligence support, and sanctions imposed on Russia by the U.S.
Despite some progress in negotiations, Rubio acknowledged that a number of issues remain “very complex,” and achieving a final agreement will require significant effort.
