U.S. President Donald Trump has accused Iranian officials of failing to honor commitments regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route. In a detailed social media post on April 12, Trump announced that he has directed U.S. naval forces to initiate a blockade of the strait, instructing them to intercept any vessels that have paid fees to Iran.
Trump’s comments followed the departure of American negotiators, including Vice President Jay D. Vance, from Pakistan after high-level talks concluded without an agreement. Vance characterized the lack of a deal as “bad news” for Tehran, while Iranian officials attributed the failure to U.S. representatives.
“Iran promised to open the Strait of Hormuz but has deliberately failed to do so. This has caused concern, chaos, and suffering for many people and countries around the world,” Trump stated. “This is a great shame and irreparable damage to Iran’s reputation.”
In his announcement, Trump emphasized that U.S. naval ships will begin blocking any vessels attempting to transit the strait from that moment onward. He added, “I have also instructed our navy to identify and seize any ship in international waters that has paid a fee to Iran. No one who pays illegal fees will have safe passage in open waters.”
Earlier, U.S. naval vessels had navigated through the strait, signaling to Iranian officials the need to restore global shipping through this vital waterway.
The negotiations between U.S. and Iranian representatives, which took place on April 11 in Islamabad, ended without resolution, primarily due to disagreements over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which Vance identified as a significant obstacle.
The impact of the failed negotiations on the ceasefire announced by Trump the previous week remains unclear.
