Negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict have been postponed. While these discussions have not been canceled, the situation in the Middle East has prompted a delay in scheduling.
Georgiy Tikhiy, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that the ongoing war involving Iran is adversely affecting the trilateral dialogue between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. He noted that multiple rounds of talks have already been postponed, emphasizing that the meetings are merely delayed and not abandoned.
Tikhiy stated during a briefing, “The attention of the U.S. is currently fully focused on the Middle East, which is why the negotiation track is on hold. However, teams are communicating daily, maintaining a working contact. The challenge lies in the fact that meetings, particularly a leaders’ meeting, are essential for advancing the process.”
He reiterated Ukraine’s stance that a meeting between leaders could potentially unlock progress in the peace process. Unfortunately, he remarked, there has been no indication from Russia of readiness for such a meeting, nor any willingness to engage in diplomacy. Instead, he observed a reliance on military strategies, which he believes will not yield success based on battlefield outcomes.
Tikhiy concluded by stating that any updates regarding new agreements for future discussions would be communicated promptly.
On the Russian side, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented on March 18, indicating that the trilateral group is currently inactive. He confirmed, “The trilateral group is on pause.”
Peskov also mentioned that Kirill Dmitriev, a representative of President Putin, continues to work within a bilateral framework with the U.S. Meanwhile, Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, noted that there is no specific date or location set for the next meeting, and the agenda remains largely undefined. He highlighted that territorial issues remain a core topic of discussion.
Trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia aimed at resolving the conflict have been postponed due to the focus on the Middle East. Both sides acknowledge the need for direct meetings to advance the dialogue, but no new dates have been set.
