On March 18, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez revealed a commitment of €1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, set to be delivered in 2026. This announcement came during a press conference held alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Madrid.
Sánchez emphasized Spain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating that the country will continue to stand by the Ukrainian people with the same intensity as at the onset of the Russian invasion. He noted that a portion of the aid will be facilitated through the European Union’s SAFE mechanism, aimed at establishing joint production initiatives with Ukraine’s defense industry. Additionally, the Spanish Ministry of Defense will provide some military equipment.
President Zelensky confirmed the signing of cooperation agreements between Ukrainian and Spanish defense companies. According to the Ukrainian presidential office, these agreements include a financial and technical assistance pact between the governments of Spain and Ukraine, as well as a memorandum for joint military production.
Zelensky’s visit to Madrid on March 18 followed a trip to London, where he met with King Charles III, addressed the British Parliament, and signed a security and defense cooperation declaration with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Following his engagements in Madrid, Zelensky is expected to travel to Brussels for a European Council meeting scheduled for March 19 and 20.
