On a recent day, the city of Sumy experienced two separate attacks by Russian forces, targeting residential buildings in the central area. The first strike occurred in the afternoon, impacting a residential block in the Kovalivka district, which resulted in a fire and left one resident requiring medical attention.
A few hours later, a second attack struck another residential building, hitting the lower floor of a five-story structure. This incident resulted in injuries to several individuals, including a child. Emergency services were deployed to extinguish the fire and provide medical assistance to the injured.
Authorities in Sumy reported ongoing evacuation efforts for residents in the affected area, which has been cordoned off for safety. Artem Kobzar, the acting mayor, noted that vehicles near the building sustained damage, and many windows in the five-story building were shattered.
As of the latest updates, the Sumy Regional Military Administration confirmed that the number of injured has risen to 14, with a 14-year-old boy among those affected. Medical professionals provided necessary care on-site, while an 87-year-old woman was transported to a medical facility. Most of the injured are elderly residents, according to the administration.
The regional military administration stated, “The enemy deliberately targets homes in residential areas. All necessary assistance is being provided to those affected.”
Contextually, Russian forces have been systematically attacking the Sumy region with drones and missiles. In the first ten days of the month alone, the city reported a series of strikes on both residential and commercial properties. Notably, on April 4, drones targeted the residential sector, and earlier attacks included strikes on a shopping center in the city center, which resulted in injuries to three individuals. Administrative buildings have also been targeted, with a drone strike hitting a military enlistment office on March 18.
