Russia Launches Drone Assault on Ukraine with Over 140 UAVs

In the early hours of March 18, Russian forces targeted Ukraine with a significant drone strike, deploying 147 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including more than 70 Shahed drones, according to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force.

By 8:00 AM, preliminary assessments indicated that Ukrainian air defense systems had intercepted or neutralized 128 enemy drones, which included various models such as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, across northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country.

The military confirmed that 15 drones struck 12 different locations, with debris from the attacks landing in three areas. Authorities warned that the assault was ongoing, with additional UAVs still present in Ukrainian airspace.

Russian military operations frequently involve a range of weaponry, including strike drones, missiles, and rocket artillery, targeting urban centers and critical infrastructure throughout Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials and international organizations categorize these strikes as war crimes, emphasizing their deliberate nature. They assert that the attacks aim to disrupt essential services, including electricity, heating, water supply, and medical assistance, which they argue constitutes genocidal actions against the Ukrainian population.

Legal experts and human rights advocates assert that the Russian government has committed various acts that could be classified as genocide, including public declarations of intent to eliminate Ukrainians as a distinct ethnic group. Such declarations have been made by Russian officials, who have denied the existence of Ukrainians as a nationality.

Furthermore, these acts include targeted assaults on vital infrastructure, persecution of pro-Ukrainian individuals in occupied territories, and systematic efforts to erase Ukrainian culture and identity.

The 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates its 149 signatory nations to prevent and punish acts of genocide, both in wartime and peacetime.

The Convention defines genocide as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Indicators of genocide include the killing of group members, inflicting serious bodily or mental harm, and deliberately creating conditions aimed at the group’s destruction.

Despite these allegations, Russian leadership continues to deny that their military is intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure, asserting that their actions are justified and necessary.

Russian forces launched a major drone attack on Ukraine, deploying over 140 UAVs, with significant interceptions reported. Ukrainian officials classify these strikes as war crimes, highlighting their impact on civilian infrastructure and essential services.
