Russia Enhances Air Combat Capabilities with Advanced Missiles

Russian fighter jets, particularly the Su-35 and Su-30SM2 models, are increasingly being equipped with the R-37M air-to-air missiles. These missiles have a range of up to 320 kilometers, significantly surpassing the capabilities of earlier missile models such as the R-77-1.

Previously, the R-37M missiles, classified by NATO as RS-AA-13, were primarily used on MiG-31 interceptors. However, they are now regularly installed on Su-35S fighters, which Russia considers essential for achieving air superiority.

Key Specifications:

  • Maximum launch range: over 300 km;
  • Flight speed: 6 Mach;
  • Target speed: 2500 km/h;
  • Missile length: 4.2 m;
  • Fuselage diameter: 0.38 m;
  • Launch weight: 600 kg;
  • Warhead weight: 60 kg;
  • Guidance system: inertial with radio correction and active radar homing in the terminal phase.

Experts note that the integration of these missiles with ground-based air defense systems complicates air operations for Western air forces. Additionally, the combat experience gained by Russian pilots during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has reportedly improved their training and potential effectiveness in future engagements.

Despite the loss of some aircraft during the full-scale invasion, estimates suggest that Russia currently possesses approximately 135 to 140 fighter jets. The extended range of the R-37M missiles and their integration with air defense systems render these aircraft significant assets in potential conflicts, particularly in air-to-ground interactions.

However, experts emphasize that Western nations maintain a considerable advantage in air power. Nonetheless, the new capabilities of Russian forces notably complicate the tactical landscape for NATO.

In related developments, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte recently stated that Russia will continue to pose a threat to the Alliance, even if a peace agreement is reached with Ukraine. He also indicated that NATO could prevail in a potential confrontation with Russia should Moscow decide to attack the bloc at this time.

Several Western officials express concerns that Russia may be preparing for conflict with NATO, suggesting that the timing of a possible attack could occur within the next few years. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans has indicated that such a threat could materialize by 2030. Additionally, German military command has speculated that a potential Russian attack on NATO countries could occur within the next 2-3 years, with Germany identified as a key area of risk.

The integration of advanced R-37M missiles into Russian fighter jets enhances their air combat capabilities, posing new challenges for NATO. While Western air forces retain a significant advantage, the evolving situation underscores the complexities of military engagement in the region.
