Over 1,000 Kenyans Recruited to Fight for Russia in Ukraine Conflict

Recent reports indicate that more than 1,000 Kenyan citizens have been recruited to participate in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, fighting alongside Russian forces. This figure, disclosed by Kenyan Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah, significantly exceeds earlier estimates of 200 recruits.

According to Ichung’wah, these individuals are leaving Kenya under the guise of tourist visas, traveling through Istanbul and Abu Dhabi before arriving in Russia. Some Kenyans living abroad are also reportedly making their way to Russia to enlist.

Many of these recruits have signed military contracts promising monthly salaries ranging from €920 to €2,400. These offers are facilitated by a Nairobi-based recruitment agency, which has been implicated in the scheme.

As of February this year, the situation appears dire for some recruits: 28 individuals are reported missing, 35 are held in camps or military bases, 89 are engaged on the front lines, and 39 have been hospitalized. Additionally, 30 Kenyans have been repatriated.

The recruitment process has raised concerns, as agencies are allegedly collaborating with corrupt airport officials in Nairobi, as well as with national employment services and representatives from both the Russian embassy in Nairobi and the Kenyan embassy in Moscow.

In related developments, foreign mercenaries have been increasingly involved in the conflict. Recently, a Filipino national fighting for Russian forces was reported killed in Donetsk. Furthermore, two Colombian citizens were captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting alongside Russian troops.

Ukrainian intelligence has also released evidence of war crimes committed by Russian forces, including intercepted communications where a commander instructs mercenaries to target civilians, including women and children.

Reports have surfaced regarding South African citizens being misled into joining the Russian military, facing harsh conditions such as inadequate food and shelter while under threat from drone attacks.

Moreover, the number of identified foreign nationals from Africa who have died in combat on behalf of Russia is rising, with recent discoveries including the bodies of two Nigerian citizens found in Luhansk.

In response to the alarming trend of recruitment, the Kenyan government has accused Russia of orchestrating a large-scale operation to enlist its citizens for the war in Ukraine. Last week, Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi announced plans to visit Moscow to address this issue directly.

The Kenyan government has reported a significant increase in the number of its citizens recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine, raising concerns about the methods used for enlistment. With many recruits facing dire circumstances, the situation has prompted government action at the diplomatic level.
