Italy is preparing to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities by supplying the SIDAM-25 anti-aircraft systems, a significant upgrade from previous military aid that included only modified M113 armored personnel carriers. This development is expected to bolster Ukraine’s defense against Iranian-made Shahed drones.
The SIDAM-25 systems, which are capable of equipping approximately three batteries, will provide Ukraine with a more robust aerial defense mechanism. This information was shared by military analyst A-129 Mangusta on the social media platform X, who has a track record of accurate predictions regarding Italian military equipment deliveries.
Another development in terms of aid I’m happy to share, Italy is sending to Ukraine the SIDAM-25 anti aircraft platform. This info coming from the same source who revealed that the B1 Centauro was being sent. No idea how many specifically, but enough for 3 batteries. pic.twitter.com/UrC4BQsDkR

Previously, the SIDAM-25 systems sent to Ukraine were limited to decommissioned M113 chassis without armament. The new shipment will include fully operational systems equipped with combat guns.
The SIDAM-25 is mounted on an M113 chassis and features a turret with four Oerlikon KBA 25-mm cannons, each with a capacity of 150 rounds. The system relies on optoelectronic sensors and a laser rangefinder for target acquisition, as it does not include its own radar.
Since its introduction in 1987, 275 SIDAM-25 units have been produced, with over 200 sold to Belgium. However, many of these units remain in storage with private companies and have not been integrated into active military service. Currently, around 68 units are available in Italy for potential transfer to Ukraine.
A key challenge for these systems will be their operational readiness, as prolonged storage may have degraded the targeting systems and other components, necessitating complex repairs due to a lack of spare parts. Nevertheless, the provision of fully functional SIDAM-25 units is expected to equip Ukraine with mobile air defense batteries specifically designed to counter Russian kamikaze drones, significantly strengthening the country’s defensive posture.
Italy's forthcoming supply of SIDAM-25 anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine marks a strategic enhancement in the country's air defense capabilities against drone threats. This delivery, which includes fully operational units, is anticipated to improve Ukraine's ability to counter aerial assaults effectively.
