Iran has sharply criticized a recent peace proposal from the United States, labeling its conditions as excessive. The Iranian government indicated that it would cease hostilities when it deems appropriate and if its own terms are met.
This response was reported by the state broadcaster Press TV on March 25, following claims that Washington had conveyed its proposal to Tehran through intermediaries in Pakistan. The U.S. offer outlined several key demands, including a halt to Iran’s uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons development, restrictions on its ballistic missile program, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of U.S. sanctions.
In its reply, Iran asserted its right to freely develop its ballistic missile program and maintain sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Tehran demanded that the United States close its military bases in the Persian Gulf region, provide financial compensation for damages incurred during the conflict, and guarantee Iran’s future security.
This response came less than a day after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington was in discussions with the right individuals in Iran regarding a ceasefire agreement. He described the talks as “very good and productive” with a “high-ranking” Iranian official.
However, Iran’s parliamentary speaker and other officials have denied any negotiations with the U.S. Despite this, reports from American media suggest that there have been at least initial contacts between the two sides through intermediaries.
On February 28, the U.S. initiated a joint military operation with Israel against Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and targeted military and nuclear sites in the country. In retaliation, Iran has launched strikes against U.S. bases and infrastructure belonging to Washington’s allies in the Persian Gulf.
Following the onset of this military operation, Iran effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route that connects the Persian Gulf to the global ocean. This strait is strategically significant, as it facilitates the transportation of oil from Gulf countries to the international market.
Iran's response to the U.S. peace proposal highlights its firm stance on sovereignty and military capabilities amid ongoing conflict. The situation remains tense, with both sides engaging in indirect communications.
