Holy Fire Ceremony Held in Jerusalem Ahead of Easter

On Saturday, April 11, just before Orthodox Easter, the Holy Fire ceremony took place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Despite plans to limit attendance due to potential rocket threats, the church was filled with visitors.

This annual event occurs on the eve of Easter, specifically in the Edicule, the chapel housing the tomb of Jesus. As per tradition, representatives from various Christian denominations inspected and sealed the Edicule to ensure no fire or means of ignition was present.

The Patriarch of Jerusalem entered the Edicule carrying torches and 33 candles, symbolizing the years of Jesus’ life at the time of his death. Following a prayer, the Holy Fire was miraculously ignited on the candles and torches.

The fire kindled at the church in Jerusalem will be distributed by Orthodox dioceses around the world, marking a significant moment in the Easter celebrations for many Christians.

The Holy Fire ceremony at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem drew large crowds despite security concerns. This annual tradition symbolizes the resurrection and is a pivotal event for Orthodox Christians globally.
