Serhiy Deyneko, the former head of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, has been mobilized for military service despite ongoing corruption investigations against him. This confirmation came from Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service (DPSU).
According to Demchenko, Deyneko has been called up under the Ukrainian law governing military obligations and has been appointed as the head of the Luhansk border detachment. He emphasized that Deyneko’s previous discharge from military service does not legally prevent him from being mobilized again, particularly given his prior military experience in defending the country.
Sources within the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) expressed their inability to intervene in this situation, highlighting the complexities surrounding Deyneko’s case. The DPSU had previously announced his discharge from military service on February 2, while denying earlier reports suggesting that his departure was due to a military medical commission.
On January 22, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office revealed that they had uncovered evidence of systematic bribery involving Deyneko and another current DPSU official, facilitating illegal border crossings. Although NABU did not disclose the names of those implicated, media reports identified Deyneko as a key suspect.
Reports indicate that searches were conducted at Deyneko’s premises, although he has not publicly commented on these investigations. On January 30, a court set a bail amount of 10 million hryvnias for Deyneko, which has since been paid.
Deyneko served as the head of the State Border Guard Service until early January, when he was replaced amid the corruption allegations.
Serhiy Deyneko, former head of Ukraine's border guard, has been mobilized for military service despite facing serious corruption allegations. His recent appointment raises questions about the intersection of military duty and ongoing investigations into his conduct.
